It was a favorite hangout for servicemen from the nearby military base. From nowhere, she came to work there until the war destroyed it with the rest of his hometown.
All that remained of it was a shell of its former self and vandals had defiled it more with graffiti. It might be next to impossible to restore it to its past glory.‘
He realized there was something she should have told him but didn’t, and there was something he shouldn’t have said but did. It was all moot now. Along with the invaders, she was gone without saying goodbye.

Too late and all that’s left are regrets. I enjoyed this (although it’s so sad).

It’s not just buildings that are destroyed by war.
14. plaridel | April 22, 2022 at 9:48 am
draliman:
the emotional aftermath can be tragic as well.

I love where you went with this. It’s a perfect balance of what you tell and what you leave out for the reader to fill in. The final paragraph is so beautifully expressed.

margaret:
it’s very kind of you. thank you. 🙂

Lovely story. You have been subtle in how you have balanced what you tell the reader and what you leave to their imagination. I can’t help wondering whether the main character has fathered a child by the woman.

penny:
i doubt it. no long-term romance here if ever there was one. she was after all a spy planted by the invaders.
25. msjadeli | April 25, 2022 at 6:27 pm
If that building symbolizes anything, it is abandonment. Your story reflects that atmosphere very well.
