For Friday Fictioneers 100-Word Challenge: 20 November 2020

Ryan thought it was time to take their friendship to the next level, but Sabina refused.
They met on the first day of school. The moment he laid eyes on her he was hooked. She stood out dressed modestly and wearing a hijab.
In spite of the cultural differences, they became fast friends sharing their love of Shakespeare and the classics.
“I’m sorry, Sabina said, “but it’s going against our family tradition.”
The rejection hit him hard. But he wasn’t one to walk away. He was determined to help her break free from the shadow of outdated beliefs and practices.

Wow. This situation could end very poorly for them both. He needs to keep in mind that in her world, their practices are not outdate. She needs to remember what can happen to women in her culture who step outside the lines.

Honestly, and many may not like my opinion, but the guy sounds like a quack. He wants to define her according to his idea of what is modern, what is a woman and who she should be to his tastes. I champion her for sticking to her beliefs and I hope she dumps him as friend too for not respecting her as a person, and her ability to choose for herself. Many Muslim women do choose to practice their faith out of conviction, and not out of obligation or family pressure.
