Marrying someone of a different race can be challenging due to cultural differences and expectations. One has to be really in love to keep the relationship going. Otherwise, it goes to the chopping block.

One day, Meghan spent hours meticulously preparing dinner. It was her dad’s favorite dish.

It was almost ready when her new husband of Asian descent arrived home from work.

“Sweetie, I smell something good,” Reuben said as he kissed her. “What’s for dinner?

“It’s barbecue ribs cooked in the oven and mashed sweet potatoes.”

“Yummy, but where’s the rice?”

Reuben slept on the couch that night.

If diet is their only cultural mismatch, I think they’ll be fine

Whoops. Seems a bit extreme. Just put the rice cooker on. Rice to Asians, is bread to Westerners. 😀

Poor Reuben should have opened his mouth only to eat. If she doesn’t know his dietary preferences by now, poor Reuben will be sleeping on the couch a lot.

    Dear Plaridel,

I can sort of relate to this story as my husband and I are from different backgrounds. We often disagree on what’s good when it comes to food. However, I think Meghan might have overreacted to Reuben. 😉 Cute story.

    Shalom,

this story is partly based on a true story. my cousin’s wife, who hailed from the pacific northwest, once complained to me that no matter how much effort she put into cooking dinner it wouldn’t be complete without rice. 🙂

Good tale – this couple need to find the right balance – he needs to think before speaking and she needs to stop overreacting 😃

I chuckled. Having spent many years in Asia I know where Reuben was coming from, but, still, he might need to learn to be a little more sensitive (haha).
