For Friday Fictioneers 100-Word Challenge: 1 March

Tom watched with bemusement as his wife’s car, long submerged in the murky depths of the river, resurfaced. It was an eerie reminder of her mysterious disappearance.

He exclaimed, “I’ll be damned!”

Tom’s thoughts were interrupted by the police knocking and reporting the recovery of his wife’s car. In the glove compartment, they found an insurance policy naming him as the beneficiary.

He looked up at the detectives, who were watching him closely. They must be thinking that he killed her.

“This is not what it looks like,” he said, clenching his fists in anger. “I didn’t do it.”

Sounds like a confession by default. He should just keep his mouth shut.

I’m surprised the papers last that long. And I’m rooting for Tom! Get him a good lawyer in your next tale.

Tom is innocent, I’m sure of it, but he’s going to have a hard time proving it.

Wow. I must say the clues suggest he did it, and that angry clenched fist and his too-quick denial aren’t doing him any good. Nicely told.

He’ll have a hard time proving his innocence. If he’d be guilty he’d surely act smarter?

    Dear Plaridel,

“I didn’t do it” almost sounds like a confession…if it’s the first thing out of his mouth. He’d best have a good attorney. 😉

    Shalom,

I think he’s innocent, but he’ll have to go through hell and back to collect that money. Police have to do their duty and investigate, and insurance companies don’t like to part with money if they don’t have to. It makes me wonder what really happened to her… Part 2 maybe?
