A Love Lock
Location: Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge), Bavaria, Germany

It was rather cold and gloomy when we hiked along the Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge) located near the Neuschwanstein Castle in Hohenschwangau, Bavaria. It was the sight of love locks affixed to the railings that helped brightened the day.

One particular lock that caught my attention is pictured above. It’s vibrant red with the couple’s initials inscribed on it. Like the others, I assume the key was tossed 295 feet down the gorge below to ensure it stays locked as well as the affection they hold for each other.

It seems that love locks on bridges have spread like a virus all over the world. Why on bridges? you may ask. Well, perhaps it’s because love is like crossing a bridge. It takes commitment to each other to get to the other side.

Winter, spring, summer, and fall, whatever the season, the lovers hope that their locks will remind them of their pledge “to love and to cherish until death do them part.” But alas, some cities like Paris have started removing them. They have been considered as blight to the landscape and endanger public safety due to the extra strain they put on the railings.

I guess we better get used to the truth that nothing lasts forever. When all is said and done, nothing will be left but memories, and they will continue to exist only for as long as we remember them. Whatever, it’s the thought that counts.

You make me a bit sad with your post… although I agree.
But I do hope S+F are still together 🙂

A bright lock that stands out for sure in the naturey landscape. I agree with their decision to remove these locks. It’s not good for the environment at all to have these locks just hanging there and for no good reason.
