With a few hours to spare, Rachel decided to go for last minute shopping.

At the souvenir shop, she found a nice gift for her mom. It was a blue Armenian ceramic vase with a peacock and floral design.

She was about to pay when a scrawny kid grabbed the money from behind. It was so sudden, that before she could react, the kid had slipped into the crowd.

She went back to the hotel flabbergasted and disappointed.

Meanwhile, the kid, who stole her money, went home to his sick mother.

“Get well, Mama!” he cried. “I bought your medicine.”

Just when I was feeling sorry for Rachel’s disappointment, only to grieve at the poor little boy and his mother’s predicament. If only we could all see beneath the surface of events and lives!

So sad. Not a thief by choice but necessity. A sad world we live in. Nicely written story.

A teaching twist if there ever was one. I dare anyone to say they wouldn’t do the same if they were the small child and their mother needed medicine.

I felt it in my bones that the thief really needed the money. Nicely told, Plaridel.

    Dear Plaridel,

There were two sides to that story and both of them went to the heart. Well done.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

I wonder wha would have happened if he had simply asked for help from the strangers around him? Maybe nothing good, but the speed with which he accomplished his theft seems to indicate it wasn’t his first, and likely won’t be his last. Not a good prospect.

Great take on the prompt, and a good twist at the end. And you managed to make me sympathise with both victim and perpetrator. Well done!

The boy certainly needed the money more than she did. However, with that logic, we should constantly donate to those who are poorer than we are until we are all at the same level. Sounds like it would work in theory, doesn’t it?
