Weekly Photo Challenge: Spare

Traveling nowadays can be so stressful as a result of added security that one wonders if it’s all worth the trouble. It shouldn’t be like this considering the ever-increasing cost of airline tickets, but that’s the new reality. Some bad people are determined to cause us harm.

After surviving the harrowing long lines at the TSA, aren’t you glad there’s this moment to spare before your flight to provide some relief?

It can be used for spending quality time with your traveling partner, texting, working on your laptop, taking a nap, having a snack, enjoying a bathroom break, staring aimlessly in space, or whatever suits your fancy provided it doesn’t alarm authorities.

And voilà! Before you realize it, it’s boarding time. You’ll be on your way to your destination.

Nice photo and message. I do have to disagree that travelling nowadays is stressful. It’s quite seamless and fast as long as you ensure you’re not carrying liquids and lots of miscellaneous things on your person as you go through the line-ups. I’ve flown several times this year already and each flight has been smooth and hassle-free. Just wanting to spur up conversation; not meant as an attack. 🙂 When was the last time you travelled and had a bad experience in the line-up process?

i guess it’s a case to case basis. last year, my flight to scotland was the worst i ever had.

due to a storm, i missed my connecting flight at chicago’s o’hare. Actually, i wasn’t alone. thousands missed their flights that day because the airport was closed for several hours. you could just imagine the chaos that ensued at the check-in counters and security checkpoints.

being rebooked on the following day, i had to stay overnight in an hntel with my own money. since it was weather-related, the airline wouldn’t pay for this accommodation. to make matters worse, the hotel in scotland also charged me for the room i had reserved but didn’t use because of this delay.

i have also noticed on many occasions that security is stricter on coming back to the u.s. in addition to the regular security checkpoint, the airline also implements their own security at boarding time that includes body checks and/or going through the x-ray machine and checking your carry-ons.

i understand it’s for own safety so i’m not complaining. 🙂

When it’s a delay due to a storm or weather-related incidents, extra steps and inconveniences are to be expected. Sorry to hear you had such troubles with the hotel though. I just personally think that the process to go to security nowadays is quite seamless. If anything, it was most tedious after the 9/11 attacks since it was mandatory for everyone to take off shoes, put liquids and aerosols in ziplock bags, and thorough searches through x-rays. In recent years, the security has been much more laxed and that’s why I disagreed with your comments there. Again, not trying to be disrespectful, but expressing why I have a different perspective.

        🙂

there’s nothing to disagree with. when it comes right down to it, your experience will vary depending on the airport. you’d find security measures aren’t uniformly enforced. i remember catching a flight in milan at 5 a.m. and breezing through security checkpoint because there was nobody there for some reason. at hubs like o’hare and schiphol, though, it’s a different story. security lines tend to be long that you run the risk of missing your connecting flight. well, let’s see what happens this summer. i’m flying to washington, d.c. next month, then to belize in july, and scandinavia in august. 🙂

Interesting interpretation! Maybe you should have suggested travelers bring a SPARE battery?!

i see your point. in those spare moments, a spare battery would indeed come in handy. 🙂
